There are two kinds of Islamic knowledge

In Surah Ya-Sin, verse 36, Allah says, which means: 'Glory be to Him, who created everything in pairs...'
Human beings are also a pair: a body and a soul, or the outward and the inward. So there must be knowledge to govern the outward, and knowledge to govern the inward. These are the knowledge of Sharia and the knowledge of Haqiqah."
Most of us today don't realize that our religious knowledge actually consists of two basic groups: the knowledge of Sharia and the knowledge of Haqiqah.
Don't be confused by the names. As long as we know the function of each, the meaning is actually quite simple.
Why are there two kinds of religious knowledge? Because religion is a set of guidelines from the Creator for human beings, and we already know that a human being consists of two main elements: the body, which is the outward, and the soul, which is the inward. That is why there must be two kinds of knowledge, each suited to guide one of these different elements. The knowledge of Sharia is the guidance for the outward, while the knowledge of Haqiqah is the guidance for the inward. This is supported by a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, number 120, in which Abu Hurairah acknowledges that he learned two kinds of knowledge from the Prophet Muhammad.
The knowledge of Haqiqah actually has several levels: Tarekat, Haqiqah, and Ma'rifah. So there's no need to be confused when you hear about the knowledge of Ma'rifah or Tarekat. Once we understand the two basic groups, Sharia and Haqiqah, it will be easy to understand all the rest, God willing.
Sadly, most people today only know and study the knowledge of Sharia, and very few study the knowledge of Haqiqah. One reason is that in our early childhood, only the knowledge of Sharia can be taught, while the knowledge of Haqiqah is not yet meant for children. But unfortunately, even when we grow up, we still don't get to learn it, because we become busy with worldly studies and technology.
The second reason is that the public image of the knowledge of Haqiqah has become distorted. Many people are afraid of it, or even dislike it, because of examples of people who studied it and behaved strangely in the eyes of ordinary people. Some even claim their knowledge of Haqiqah is so high that they no longer need to pray. Astaghfirullah.
But we want to remind you that studying both Sharia and Haqiqah is very important, because they are partners, not opposites. Yes, we must be careful in choosing what to study, but that doesn't mean we should refuse to study the knowledge of Haqiqah. If we don't study it, it means we don't care about our own soul. Only the knowledge of Haqiqah can teach us how to protect our soul, how to keep it clean and pure, as stated in Surah Ash-Shams, verses 9 and 10, which mean: "Successful is the one who purifies the soul, and ruined is the one who corrupts it." Only those who study the knowledge of Haqiqah will know how to purify the soul, and what things can corrupt it.
