The Proper Way to Learn Hakikat

The way an inner knowledge class is taught can tell us a lot about whether it is genuine

Today there are many hakikat (inner knowledge) classes that prefer to call themselves this tariqah or that tariqah. They emphasize the name tariqah to show that they specialize in the path (tariqah) of drawing closer to Allah. Generally, they use a spiritual method in the form of dhikr (repeated remembrance of Allah).

This is where the most common mistake in the study of hakikat happens. It is true that hakikat and shariah are two different branches of knowledge. But remember, although they are different, they cannot be separated, because they are two in the form of a pair. Think of the soul and the body: they are two different things, but they must always go together. The body cannot come first with the soul coming later, and the soul cannot come first with the body left behind. This means the study of shariah must go hand in hand with the study of hakikat. Only for young children can we teach the shariah part alone at first. So, the study of hakikat should begin with an introduction in shariah. This is very important so that the student does not misunderstand and think he can choose just one of the two. Instead, they must practice both shariah and hakikat together. And this is where we can judge whether a teacher of hakikat has sufficient knowledge of both.

Why is this so important? If you are someone who only has knowledge of shariah, and you study hakikat the right way, with the two taught together, you will see clearly how strong the connection between them is. You will not be able to deny to yourself that we are indeed obligated to learn both. But if hakikat is taught directly, without first being introduced through shariah, you will feel as if the two are cut off and unrelated. This is what often happens today, so that people who have knowledge of shariah feel that the teaching of hakikat is made up. In the end, they cannot accept it and even accuse hakikat of being deviant.

To stay safe and keep it simple, just always remember that shariah and hakikat are truly like the body and the soul, always going together as a pair. The moment we start to think that one of them can be ignored, that is when the sign of deviation in that knowledge becomes clear.
