Is there anyone today who really receives guidance from Allah?

Nowadays, there are many study circles on the knowledge of haqiqah (spiritual reality) taught by a teacher who has only graduated from an Islamic college, or a teacher who has only received a certificate passed down from teacher to teacher, without having received guidance from Allah

The main requirement for a teacher of tawhid who is going to teach the knowledge of knowing Allah is that he must truly receive guidance from Allah. This is because no one can introduce Allah except Allah Himself. For example, Prophet Muhammad introduced Allah to the earlier communities with the help of guidance in the form of revelation from Allah. Or one could say, it is actually Allah who introduces Himself through His mouthpiece, the Prophet Muhammad.

Remember, Allah is unseen. So if a teacher who teaches the knowledge of knowing Allah does not receive guidance from Allah, it is certain that he is teaching under the direction of the other unseen entities: the jinn, Iblis, and satan.

The proof is that today there are many study circles on the knowledge of haqiqah that have gone astray, because they are taught by teachers who only hold a certificate from an Islamic college, or who only received an ijazah passed down from teacher to teacher, without receiving guidance from Allah. This reality makes things even worse, because it creates fear among the public about studying the knowledge of haqiqah. As a result, 90% of Muslims today only have knowledge of shariah, without any knowledge of haqiqah. In fact, the knowledge of Islam comes as a pair: shariah and haqiqah. (If you do not know about this yet, read the article "Religious Knowledge Has 2 Parts.")

A teacher who truly receives guidance from Allah will honestly explain how he received that guidance, and will also dare to honestly show the evidence of the guidance he received, so that it can be examined and judged by those who want to learn from him. This is very important, because if merely claiming to have received guidance were enough, anyone could make that claim, and even satan can give "guidance" in order to mislead us.

One more characteristic of a person who receives guidance from Allah can be seen in the Quran, Surah Yasin, verse 21: such a person does not ask for payment for teaching this knowledge of Allah.

Know that Allah has indeed said there is no prophet after Prophet Muhammad, and that means no more revelation will come down. But remember that Allah never said He would stop giving guidance after the death of Prophet Muhammad. In fact, Allah said very clearly, "ud'uni astajib lakum" (call upon Me, and I will answer you). If we ask for sustenance, we will be given sustenance, and if we ask Allah questions, Allah will surely answer, because Allah is the One who speaks, not mute.

So, if there is no more revelation, how does Allah give guidance to people today? The answer is in Surah Ash-Shams, verse 8: "fa alhamaha fujuraha wa taqwaha", meaning: "And We inspired the soul with its path of wickedness and its path of righteousness." So for ordinary people who are not prophets, Allah gives guidance in the form of words of inspiration (ilham), not revelation (wahyu). According to the Quran, then, Allah's guidance in the form of words comes in only two ways: first, revelation, and second, inspiration. And this already existed in the past. For example, the mother of Prophet Moses was not a prophet, yet Allah sent inspiration to her, telling her to set her baby (Moses) adrift on the river. Another example is Umar, who is clearly recorded in an authentic hadith as one of the people who received inspired guidance.

Remember, from the time of Prophet Adam to the time of Prophet Muhammad, Allah always gave guidance to mankind so that people could be saved in this world and the hereafter, by sending down scriptures and scrolls to the prophets and messengers. So it is unthinkable that after the death of Prophet Muhammad, Allah would stop giving guidance to mankind and leave people in misguidance and confusion.

But we are sure that many people may not believe this. Most people just say that Islam is already perfect and the Quran is already complete, but in truth they are lying to themselves. The Quran is indeed complete, but if we are honest, there are so many verses of the Quran whose meaning and intent we do not know, such as Alif Lam Mim, the seven layers of the heavens, the purification of the soul, and others. We dismiss all of them by saying "Allahu a'lam" or "only Allah knows," so we never come to know. This is truly strange. How could Allah send down guidance for mankind when only Allah knows its meaning? Hmm...

So, if the Quran is our guidance, then when we do not know the meaning of a verse, whom should we ask? Surely Allah. In fact, this is commanded by Allah Himself when He says "ud'uni astajib lakum" (call upon Me, and I will answer you). And this is our mistake, even the mistake of our religious leaders today: our faith, or our trust in Allah, has disappeared. So we feel unable or no longer confident to ask and receive answers from Allah, the All-Hearing and the One who speaks. (This concerns the matter of faith, and you need to study the pillars of faith again, correctly.) And if you think that Quranic commentaries (tafsir) can help us understand the mutashabihat verses, then know that there are now hundreds of kinds of tafsir, and sometimes a single verse has more than ten different interpretations. So which one do you want to follow? And know that tafsir is, as the word implies, only an interpretation, and so it will never be exactly right.

So, as long as the ummah does not meet a person who truly receives guidance from Allah, for that long Islam will remain split into many sects, as the hadith says, splitting into 73 groups. This happens because each group holds to the same Quran but differs in its interpretation of certain verses. And none of them ever ask or inquire of Allah to learn the true meaning, because they no longer believe that Allah will answer their prayers.

If you still doubt that there are people who receive inspired guidance from Allah, know that even an animal, the bee, can receive inspired guidance from Allah (see Surah An-Nahl). How much more so human beings, whose creation is so noble.

Be certain that if we never meet a person who receives guidance from Allah, then until we die, all of our worship and good deeds will be in doubt and based only on guesswork, whether accepted or not. This means we dare to gamble our fate in the hereafter at 50:50, that is, we might be saved and we might not. Because without such a person who receives guidance from Allah, only in the hereafter will we know for sure whether our worship was right or wrong. And if it turns out in the hereafter that our prayer was not correct and was not accepted, we will be like those described in the Quran who ask to be sent back to the world to correct their worship. And of course that is impossible, because life in this world happens only once, so for certain... hell will be our place, we seek refuge in Allah from that.

It is indeed not easy for you to believe this, because not only you, but many of our religious leaders also doubt it. And we cannot convince you to believe it either. But if you are truly someone who is certain about the threat of the torment of the hereafter written in the Quran, prepared for those whose deeds are not accepted, then please contact us. We can hold a mudzakarah (discussion) to explain this directly. Hopefully, by listening in person, you can get a more satisfying explanation and ask questions more freely, God willing.
