Did you choose Islam, or were you just born into it?

Remember, faith isn't inherited. So when did you become Muslim? Even if you were born into a Muslim family, you still have to ask yourself.

The simplest answer to the question "Since when is a person a Muslim?" is: since they bersyahadat (made the declaration of faith).

Pay close attention to the wording: "since they made the declaration," not "since they recited the words of the shahada." There is a big difference between "making the declaration of faith" and "reciting the words of the shahada."

Merely pronouncing the words of the shahada is something anyone can easily do. Even a non-Muslim can easily utter them. But that does not mean that someone who recites the shahada automatically becomes a Muslim. It is different if they truly "make the declaration," because the meaning of bersyahadat is "to state a conviction." So before a person declares their belief that there is no god but Allah, they must already have examined and studied the matter until they finally became convinced that there is indeed no god but Allah. Only after that do they state this conviction in the words "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah."

So, before a person decides to utter the shahada, they have already investigated, studied, reflected upon, and become convinced that there is no god but Allah. In short, they are saying something they already know. That is why there are four conditions for a valid shahada, one of which is "KNOWLEDGE."

Therefore, this process of seeking knowledge and learning before believing must be undertaken by every Muslim, whether a convert or born into a Muslim family. This is what makes a true Muslim: one who is Muslim based on knowledge, not merely by inheritance and not by simply following others.

Looking at the words of the shahada, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," what is the most important knowledge a person must have before declaring it? The answer is: knowledge of the One they are about to believe in, namely Allah.

So a person's shahada is complete once they know who Allah is, often called "knowing Allah" (mengenal Allah). How can one come to know Allah? Certainly through learning, following the same method our Prophet used when he introduced Allah to the people of his time.

To know Allah, we must study the science of tauhid (the oneness of God), which includes the lesson of awaluddin makrifatullah ("the beginning of religion is knowing Allah").

It is therefore clear that a person's shahada is complete when they have studied tauhid. This science belongs to the category of hakikat (the knowledge of ultimate reality). So now let each of us ask ourselves: have we studied tauhid and awaluddin makrifatullah? If not, then reflect on this carefully. And this is also what determines "when you become a Muslim": when you have come to know who the God of Islam is, or when you have come to know who Allah is.

Most people would probably think, "How is it possible for us to know Allah, when Allah is unseen (ghaib) and cannot be seen?"

It is true that Allah is unseen, but that does not mean Allah cannot be known. If we do not know Allah, then what are we worshipping? Is it enough to know only His name? And if we do not know Allah, how could we possibly return to Allah at the time of death (sakratul maut)? It is impossible to return to something we do not know. It is clearly stated in innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un: from Allah we come, and to Allah we return.

So, to be honest, most people today are willing to work and think themselves to exhaustion for worldly matters, yet they are very lazy about thinking and striving for matters of religion and the hereafter. As a result, many of them make excuses, saying "religion shouldn't be complicated..." or "being granted the ability to prostrate is already something to be grateful for..." In truth, all of these statements show that they are lazy to study religious knowledge, which means they value the world above the hereafter.
